Sustainable development

Sustainable development is a dynamic process that allows people to realize their potential and improve their way of life, protecting the planet's support systems. Most important aspects are the justice and social equity, which must be accessible to all people. Furthermore, means that sustainable development is not confined to the efficient management of the environment, but a social and economic process, which also aims to improve people's lives.

Sustainable development, economic and social policy is one of the priorities of the European Union since 1997, when it was included as an objective in the Treaty of Maastricht a Sustainable Development Strategy for an enlarged Europe - adopted in June 2006. This is intended as a catalyst for public policy makers who, in order to change behavior in European society and the active involvement of policy makers, public and private, and citizens in the development, implementation and monitoring of sustainable development.

For Romania, as EU member state, sustainable development is becoming the only rational national perspective, resulting in establishment of a new paradigm of development by the confluence of economic, social and environmental.

Term development of social science backgrounds, as it means an increase, an improvement. But beyond the social aspect of development, the most important environmental problems, namely the environmental problem. The unprecedented development of technology has led to increased industrial activities impact, de often negative environmental impacts. With the advent of the first adverse "tangible" that past activities have on the environment today, and reached a logical conclusion: what is implemented today will affect tomorrow's quality of life.

Environmental protection a pillar of sustainable development

Sustainable development focuses not only on environmental protection, but he aims and concerns on social and economic growth.

Environmental protection means:

  • protect Earth ability to maintain life in all its diversity;
  • observance of the planet's natural resources;
  • ensure a high level of protection and improvement of environmental quality by preventing and reducing environmental pollution;
  • promoting sustainable production and consumption to determine destruction links between economic growth and environmental degradation.

Romania has a stunning natural capital, far more than other EU countries. However, and despite much lower incomes than those of Europe, in Romania, resource consumption and waste generated are large, ranging over the natural regeneration capacity of the environment.

In this context, both state institutions and the business community and civil society acknowledges and accepts the need to gradually implement social and environmental policy. For example, environmental protection is becoming increasingly a shared responsibility of several interest groups: authorities, companies, financial institutions, managers, creditors, contractors, customers and the public. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without a correlation of all those policies relating, on the one hand, economic and social development and, on the other hand, environmental protection.

State institutions are those that may require, by clear rules and adhering to international conventions, rules for sustainable development. Romania's sustainable development strategy was developed under the name "Horizon 2025". Also, there are laws aimed at protecting the environment, pollution and waste collection. Other governmental or independent authority established rates of consumption of resources to ensure their continuity over time. Regional or county level, local authorities are involved in developing programs for the sustainable development objectives.

In these circumstances, investment now will bring tomorrow's performance.
