Tara Fagarasului is an ethno-geographical area that lies between Olt River and Fagaras Mountains. The region leaves the impression of a strong geographical unit. The region is crossed by many valleys named after the villages from Fagaras.

Fagaras Mountain actually gathers the whole Southern Carpathians, from the Olt Valley to the west, Barsa Valleys, Grosetul and Dambovita on east, Fagaras depression and north and Jiblei, Aref, Bradet and Campulung on the south.

Fagaras Mountains is distinguished in the Carpathian chain as a huge peak, which runs from east to west over a length of about 70 km and a width of approx 40 km. The Fagaras Mountains have eight of the 14 Romanian peaks that reach an altitude of 2500 like Moldoveanu (2544 m), Negoiu (2535 m), Corner Vistei Great (2527 m).The difficult routes and the hanging cliffs are a big challenge for all climbers. The wonderful landscapes and the joy of adventure are a real reward for the tourists.

Along the Olt Valley lots of villages fully-blown and are now perfect for cultural, ecological and fun activities. Access is facilitated by the configuration of the mountain region (positioned in the center of the country), the presence of numerous valleys and streams, and low altitudes. Fagaras land area is crossed by DN 1 - DN Europe 68 and 73 A.

Population

Romania's population decreased by over 2.6 million, from 21,680,974 in 2002 to 19,042,936 people, according to provisional results of Population and Housing Census done in 2011. The most drastic population decline has been felt in Fagaras city, which decreased from 36,121 to 28,330 inhabitants. The decrease could also be seen in Victoria City, Voila, Cincu ans Jibert villages.

Employment structure shows that a large part of inhabitants is working in hotels and restaurants, commerce, transportation, etc. In Tara Fagaras area, the most obvious economic activities are agricultural, industrial and service.

Tourism

Tara Fagarasului presents a lot of peculiarities, such as: landscape, accessibility, complexity, presence of protected cultural and historical monuments. Tara Fagarasului is situated in the middle of the country, which means an advantage for the touristic activity from the region.

Tourism demand in this area has increased year by year mainly due to diversification by highlighting the historical monuments, of monasteries, but also by creating the ski slides (Dragus and Bale). It should be noted that the Romanian budget holidays increased. The number of tourists increased by 23% in the period between 2005 and 2009 from 99,000 to 122,000. The number of foreign tourist arrivals in the same period of time increased by approximately 15%. Fagaras Country area offers real prospects for integrated tourism development and transformation into a destination capable of attracting thousands of Romanian tourists, but also foreign tourists.

The hydrography

The hydrographic network, with its the forms of presentation (streams, lakes, springs) and their characteristics are important tourist attractions. Făgăraş Land area has a rich hydrographic potential, and is considered by experts as a water tank, influenced to a great extent by the large quantities of mixed precipitation.

All Fagaras Country teritory belongs to the superior drainage area of Olt river. From genetic point of view, Tara Fagaras ist the opera of the river Olt, in his battle with the mineral nature of the Earth. That is why the region is called Tara Oltului too.

The hydrographic network is asymmetric. Most of the Olt river tributaries are on the left bank, which tears down Fagaras Mountains and heading north almost parallel.

Tributaries from the left Bogata, Comăna, Veneţia, Părău, Şercaia, Mândra, Sebeş, Făgăşel, Hurez, Dridif, Breaza, Lisa, Sâmbăta, Viştea, Corbu-Ucei, Gârlăţel, Arpaş, Cârţişoara, Porumbacu, Avrig, Moaşa. Tributaries on the right are: Dăişoara, Ticuşu, Şoarş, Cincu, Nou.

In Tara Fagarasului you can also find ridge glacial lakes like: Urlea, Podragul, Podrăgel, Capra, Bâlea, Avrig, Doamnei. Or artificial lakes like: Viştea, Voila, Mândra. And also trout farms like: Dejani and Sâmbăta de Sus. Along the river, the tourists can practice fishing or lake sports.

Climate

The characteristics of the climate of the Fagaras Country (temperature, precipitation, dynamics and atmospheric pressure), along with other components of the landscape (relief, hydrography, vegetation, wildlife), it is in natural resources with major impact on tourism.

In Fagaras Country there is a continental temperate climate but also a mountain climate.

The climate is differentiated on the two main stages of relief depending on altitude, exposition and slope form. In the mountain are characteristic cool summers with heavy rainfall and cold winters with high snowfall and snow cover stable over a long period. Hill land climates are characterized by hot summers, relatively frequent rainfall and cold winters, with snow relatively stable, punctuated occasionally by heating intervals.

Flora and fauna

The specific landforms of Fagars Country, the mounatins and the depressions, generate a variety of vegetation. So, on mountains cliffs we have alpin and subalpine flora. At altitudes above 1600-1700 meters we can see a great variety of plants, which have adapted to the rough natural conditions. Here we can find nemțisorul, mountain blooms, edelweiss or violets. We can also find: blueberry bushes, mountain pine, mountain alder. From spring to late fall, the alpine meadows are covered by enamelled carpet of flowers that rise of grasses (sedge, păruşcă, spiky).

As you descend, you can find huge coniferous forests, predominated by larches. The spruce forests monotony is punctuated by glades for grazing only. Then you can find pine forests and mixed forests of spruce trees and phage.

With changing of altitude, the deciduous forests have replaced the coniferous forests, the most common element being the beech; between the shrubs, the most common is the nut.

Compared to the tree wealth of the heights, the plain depression seems poor, almost totally devoid of forests. It should be mentioned, however, floodplain forest, stretching along the Olt and made of black alder, willow and poplar species, wet meadows.

Climate changes of the past have left interesting islands of surviving vegetation. So, there were individualized flora and fauna reserves have been put under protection. The Reserve "Poiana Narciselor" from Dumbrava Vadului is the most known reservation in the region. It has more that 400 ha and its considered one of the highest of its kind in Europe. Located at the foot of Fagaras Mountains, near Şercaia, this reserve from the perimeter of a former oak forest (over 100 years old), with large meadows is characterized by unusual abundance of daffodils (Narcissus Stelaris) in May - June.

Another important reserve is "Lake and alpin Golf Balea" with an area of 120 ha, which protects the glacial landscape, lake, rocks, alpine flora and fauna. The relief of the reservation is injured, the largest part of its surface is composed of scarps, oriented to north-south.
